ED – Lower Ground Floor Reconfiguration, Royal Free Hospital

Case studies > Capital projects

Originally intending to deliver 8 packages of work in ED and UTC through Government centrally funded UEC Covid-19 monies, the project scope grew and ultimately 23 packages of work were delivered by the project team. These works packages included: a UTC Upgrade, creation of Shielding Cubicles and Nurse Base, new Staff Facilities, Covid-19 Cubicles in the Paediatric Area, increased Capacity Waiting Area, provision of a Mini-Pharmacy in ED and 2 Video-Conferencing Spaces, Refurbishment of the Large Gym.

Scheme highlights

Despite having limited survey and design information, the team worked collaboratively to deliver the works packages to the requirements of the users, in an extremely limited period of time. Significant Step Change, and Functional Service and Visual Transformation of the entire area.

Challenges

Due to the time restrictions on the central funding, the project moved at pace and a contract was awarded with minimal surveys & investigations, & incomplete design & project brief. A contract sum was not agreed until March 2021. In addition, due to working in a live environment in small areas – decanting played a major part of the project and presented many challenges to the team and users. As a result of the speed of project initiation/implementation there was no formal governance , Terms of Reference or Change Control process – these were undertaken at a local level with Users and Director of Projects.
