Case studies > Capital projects

To carry out upgrade and repair works to the service road area of the Royal Free Hospital which was an unsafe working environment. It is an important access and through route for the trust, requiring road and pathway resurfacing, safety rails, rationalised parking, and upgraded signage.

Scheme highlights

Much of the vehicle and pedestrian routes have been re-surfaced.

Dedicated level access pedestrian routes with safe crossings and handrails for staff and visitors, segregated from vehicular traffic flows.

More secure bicycle parking and segregated motor cycling parking with lock rail.

Clear parking and loading bay designations .

Gates to control traffic.

Upgrade to stairway and bridge to ensure it is safe to use in all weathers.

New traffic speed humps to assist in managing traffic speed.

Revised and rationalised signage.

Challenges

Delivering the upgrades on a site in use 24/7, where many upgrades were fair weather dependent.

Engaging with multiple stakeholders and adapting to stakeholder needs not fully captured at outset despite extensive consultation.

Changing behaviours.

“This was never going to be a high profile project expecting praise. Success was measured in the form of no significant complaints or impact on Business as Usual, and subsequent user compliance with the aims.”

Dave Reavy, Head of Security and Max Marshall, Clinical Ops Manager
