Breast Clinic, Royal Free Hospital

Case studies > Capital projects

The project aims to strengthen compliance against the key cancer performance targets, improve the patient experience and to enable the service to meet the increasing activity demand as it grows due to the predicted yearly increase and cope with additional workflows from neighbouring trusts. Two new mammography machines and two new ultrasound machines were also installed in the newly refurbished and expanded facility.

Scheme highlights

The facility was doubled in size and created a much improved patient flow. The number of consult exam room increased from 4 to 6, the number of imaging rooms doubled from 2 to 4, the waiting area was increased in size and a separate more discrete sub-wait for imaging was also provided. Dedicated changing rooms and WC facilities were also provided thereby meeting the required actions identified following the Care Quality Commission visit.

Challenges

The department had to remain operational whilst the works were taking place so there had to be detailed planning around patient appointments for noisy works and to maintain patient privacy and dignity in such a sensitive area.

“It’s fantastic and really well received by patients!!”
