Barnet Hospital Modular Unit

Case studies > Capital projects

Delivery of increased bed capacity at Barnet Hospital by 35, to improve Emergency Department performance, the hospital flow, patient experience, and ensure patients are cared for in the right place at the right time.

Scheme highlights

Engaged design team, clinical professionals, and contractors in a very short period of time in order to respond to the pressures of COVID-19 on the main hospital building with a specific but non compliant space within an initial 8 week period. As the COVID threat was minimised in the Trust, a decision was made to then build the space to be fully compliant to HTM and HBN. With a revision of design and further challenges around compliance and service connections to the PFI supported infrastructure the building was completed with full medical gases and ventilation within a further 18 weeks.

Challenges

Working during the COVID period with strict challenges around social distancing, strict adherence to on site precautions including full PPE, onsite washing facilities, one wear overalls. There were considerable challenges on materials sourcing during the COVID period which meant negotiations with suppliers with regards opening and flexibility of service. Tight timescales meant the design team and contractor along with the PM team had to make quick and informed decisions to meet deadlines. New strategies of working had to be deployed.

“We’re very proud of what our clinical, operational and estates teams have done over a short period of time to bring much needed additional bed capacity to Barnet Hospital.”
